Have you heard about Yogalates? It combines the flexibility and relaxation of Yoga with the strengthening of Pilates.

Who thinks these things up, you ask? An instructor of both, of course. Louise Solomon decided to fuse the two after noting the high rate of injury in Yoga. She began teaching it in the 1990s, wrote a book in 2003, and opened a Yogalates studio in New South Wales, Australia, in 2005. She’s also produced a number of DVDs.

Bayshore Fit gym in Tampa will be gearing up for a new season in September 2015 that will run through May.

Yogalates is a Safe Way to Build Strength and Flexibility

Yogalates helps build up strength, stability, stamina, and flexibility. According to Yogalates.com, there is a particular focus on toning postural muscles that protect the spine, support internal organs, and promote good posture.

Like Pilates, there is resistance training, but with a band instead of a machine. Like Yoga, there are poses (asana) practiced to create a sense of balance throughout the body and spirit.

Yogalates is particularly helpful for people who deal with back pain, arthritis, and osteoporosis. It’s recommended for women recovering from pregnancy and childbirth and people recouping from surgery. It’s been noted as an excellent way to relive stress as well.

Finally, Yogalates is customizable. There are no poses or resistance that “must” be achieved. If a pose isn’t working for a person, or judged unsuitable, it will be dropped.
